Day 16: To Punta Arenas

This was the last day on the motorcycles, and a long one. We had a border crossing, a ferry ride, rain, and the strongest wind of the trip. The wind was blowing at 40mph+. Often we were riding for long distances with the wind blowing from the side and our bikes leaned over to the side at about 20 degrees. The wind, gusts from oncoming semi-trucks, and the rain kept us on our toes.

Here we are on the ferry as we leave the island of Tierra del Fuego.

We rode a total of just over 2,700 miles.

We crossed the border five times. We had multi page packets on the bikes and us. Lots of stamps in those forms by border officials. We would get strips of paper about three inches wide at each crossing. Theses got stamped at each of the three stations in the crossing. As we left each crossing these needed to handed to border personnel as we left. We also got pieces of paper with information about us and our border crossing. We had to show these and our passports to get photocopied at the first hotel after crossing the border. A border crossing, through two countries stations typically took about an hour. Here is a picture of the folded in half front of my six page packet.

We were on this trip for 16 days. We saw mountains, glaciers, immense lakes, deserts, and the far tip of South America. It was a good crew on the trip. We laughed a lot. It was an adventure. Now it's time for the series of long flights home to Boston.
